Run Reigate gets bigger

DSC_0295-1Building on last year’s success, Run Reigate’s second Fitness & Food Festival, in partnership with Reigate & Banstead Borough Council, is set to be even bigger and better.

Once again, Priory Park will play host to the runners’ Event Village where runners can indulge in complimentary post-race massages, meet our charity partners and local sports clubs and running brands, including adidas and local retailers including Simply Sports and Maison du Velo.

Our inaugural event was praised for its special community feel and family-friendly atmosphere and this year, we’re going to greater lengths to ensure Race Day has even more for kids of all ages to enjoy.

At the new Move Revolution Kids Active Village sponsored by Move Revolution children will be invited to try their hand at climbing walls, crazy golf, a giant inflatable assault course, bouncy castles, hockey, face painting, a Nerf gun target zone and archery shooting range and much more. Of course all this means you can just concentrate on running a great race – safe in the knowledge your family will be getting fit and entertained at the same time!

And you’ll be pleased to hear activities in the Move Revolution Kids Active Village are totally FREE, thanks to our sponsor Move Revolution, so there’s no need to shy away in fear of being ripped off – make a day of it on 20 September and bring your whole family along.

Yazoo will be sampling milkshakes and there’s also our Food Village which this year promises double the number of stalls for an even wider selection of delicious food for runners and spectators alike.

You can look forward to gourmet burgers from local celebrity chef Tony Tobin, and tasty offerings from local cafes such as Beryl and Pegs. Food will be available from 8am so you can also tuck into breakfast.

The Samaritans….some background on one of our charity partners

Samaritans was founded in 1953 by Chad Varah who was a vicar living in London.

Throughout his career Chad had offered counselling to his parishioners, and wanted to do something more specific to help people struggling to cope and possibly contemplating suicide. Just a year later in 1954 Chad officially handed over the task of supporting the callers to the volunteers, and Samaritans as we know it today was born. Samaritans service today still operates on Chad’s guiding principles of confidential, non-judgmental support.

Today there are over 20,500 volunteers, 201 branches across the UK and Ireland and annually we receive over 5,000,000 calls for help. Samaritans are available 24 hours a day and 365 days a year.

Samaritans of East Surrey was established in 1964 and last year we celebrated the 50th Anniversary of our branch. We are currently located in the High St, Reigate. If you are interested in becoming a Samaritan volunteer please contact our branch for details of our next open evening – thank you.sams 50th anniv celeb

Gary Maytham, Consultant Vascular Surgeon

North Downs Hospital Vascular Consultant takes up the Run Reigate challenge

I’m Gary Maytham, and I am a Consultant Vascular Surgeon who offers a vascular service at North Downs Hospital. My NHS consultant practice is at St George’s Hospital in Tooting. I specialise in venous disorders, complex vascular access for renal dialysis patients, and peripheral vascular disease. My practice includes the management of varicose veins. I am also a regular officer in HM Armed Forces.

Why have I signed up for the RunReigate half-marathon? Well, quite unexpectedly, Nicola, the Marketing Manager at North Downs Hospital, asked if I was a runner. She was looking for one of the consultants to take part. I replied I was. And the past tense is probably correct… Read More

We scooped Silver in the 2015 Running Awards!

On Friday 24th April 2014 we had the pleasure of attending the 2015 Running Awards, a national awards scheme that recognises the best in the British running industry, from kit and technology to events and nutrition.

1975075_10153313219383552_3376215913589047866_nWe were more than delighted to be shortlisted in the ‘UK’s best half marathon’ category after our first half marathon; a huge achievement, which is testament only to the tireless energy of the Run Reigate team.

It was a night filled with anticipation, made slightly worse by the fact our category was second to last, but finally after a delicious meal and the Runner’s World PB awards it was time….

Following a nail-biting introduction the results were announced…we scooped Silver place!! Recognised for our great organisation, super friendly atmosphere and stunning scenic route.

We beat the Great North Run, The Royal Parks Foundation Half Marathon and a list of equally stand-out events, we couldn’t have been more proud!

What a result for our first year! Suffice to say we’re now even more excited about our second year and we’re working even harder to make this year bigger, better and more memorable for runners and spectators alike.
