Are you getting the most from Google Analytics?

Many of the world's leading brands are now using Google Analytics. Opening an account and placing code onto your site is a start, but poor Google Analytics implementation can spell disaster for your business!

Many people go as far as adding Google Analytics to their website, but so many don’t follow the best practices (or even the basics). Problems left undetected can both result in poor quality data, and also end up with you basing your decisions on misinformation.

Are you confident you have covered the fundamentals:

  • You have added tracking code to every page of your website (we have tools we use to test this)
  • You have correctly configured the goals you need to track?
  • Ecommerce code has been correctly implemented on your checkout page?
  • Have you forgotten about any landing pages, sub-domains or cross domain tracking requirements?
  • Do you use a third party shopping cart (including Paypal) and have you made allowances?
  • Have you tagged your marketing channels correctly so they will be tracked?
  • Have you linked your account to adwords?
  • Do you know how to create powerful custom reports to surface information important to your business?
  • Have you created custom segments to allow accurate analysis of your data?
  • Have you set KPI’s and created custom dashboards for the different parts of your business?
  • Are you making the most of all of Google Analytics features?
    • Tracking social media (Facebook likes, +1’s, tweets)
    • Webmaster tools integration
    • Site speed analytics
    • Custom variables
    • Event tracking
    • Phone call tracking integration
    • And so much more...

As a business, if you do not have the skills, experience, time or resource to competently tackle all of the above; setting up your own Google Analytics account can be a risky strategy and could turn out to be a false economy.

A well thought out and correctly implemented Google Analytics account should provide the foundations that underpin your other digital marketing activities, not (as we often find) be an afterthought.

Spending money on PPC, SEO, display or any other digital marketing activity can be impossible to optimise or truly understand if you don’t make the investment to set up your analytics in advance so that you can understand the digital journeys taking place.

In our experience the budget invested in analytics will pay you back very quickly. If you truly have visibility of what works you can soon start to optimise your website for conversions. Effective analytics underpin any optimisation, whether that be conversion optimisation (A/B testing or MVT) taking place on your website or more effective planning of where you spend your marketing money.
