Improving reporting through Google Analytics integration

Acquia is a software-as-a-service company that provides the leading cloud platform for building, delivering, and optimising digital experiences.

They specialise on the provision of enterprise products, services, and technical support for open-source web content management platforms.

The brief 

Acquia approached Jellyfish and other suppliers to get an audit of the Google Analytics implementation they had at the time across the site www.acquia.com and all its sub-domains.

The objectives set were as follows:

  • Understand Analytics and reporting set up
  • Design and Implement a robust Google Analytics measurement for accurate reporting across the business units
  • The site structure was formed by several sub-domains independently functional and each of them offering different solutions to customers
  • Their main goal was to understand if the structure and setup were optimal for reporting and data analysis purposes, at first, with the end goal of applying any necessary fixes including additional tracking recommended as a result of the initial audit

The results

Jellyfish successfully delivered a detailed document as an outcome of the audit conducted across the website tracking and the Google Analytics account.

Acquia’s Google Analytics account was using a previous version of the tool, had problems with sub-domain tracking, causing loss of user and session data , and there was a high potential for additional tracking to a better understand of the user behaviour.

As a result of the audit and recommendations, Acquia requested the account to be fixed and migrated over to Universal Analytics via Google Tag Manager. Jellyfish conducted this work so Acquia could continue their reporting to the different business units.

Jellyfish delivered the audit and implemented all fixes and recommendations outlined within the audit document provided. The work was conducted by working closely with Acquia and speed up the code implementation across the sub-domains using some of the CMS add-ons.
The Google Analytics account was migrated to its latest version Universal Analytics, and this was facilitated through Google Tag Manager. The latest has provided enormous flexibility for the administration of the website pixels and for implementation of any new requirements, causing a reduction of the dependency on development resources.

As it stood with the implementation work conducted by Jellyfish, Acquia had full capability for reporting and full flexibility to provide reporting to each of the business units. This included maintaining the whole user journey across www.acquia.com and its sub-domains and avoiding any duplicity in terms of users and/or sessions.
